Birds Eye View of Fort Guijarros 1796 The aerial view of Fort Guijarros, which
is Spanish for “cobblestones",
includes the small Spanish Army barracks and flagpole behind the 20-foot
thick walls of the fort.
La Esplanada at Ballast Point 1796 One name for the fort is "La Esplanada," which
refers to this 20-foot wide gun deck.
Battle of San Diego Bay 1803 The only ship-to-shore cannon duel occurred on Ballast Point on March 22, 1803. Fort Guijarros fired on the American merchant brig, Lelia Byrd, for more than 45 minutes.

Ballast Point Whaling Station 1865-1880 The Ballast Point Whaling Station was run
by the Packard Whaling Company. They captured gray whales and rendered
their fat on the Point.
Chinese Fishing Camp at Ballast Point 1860-1874 Dried fish were consumed locally or sold to markets in San Francisco.
